Snow is beautiful, but I already miss the grass. Only, in between the two, there is the dreadful time when roads turn to ice :((((
So, let there be snow for a while yet! :)

Versailles campaign(s)

Haven't been here for a while! So many things happening in RL, also online Hoping to return in the near future, it is a lovely space.

Speaking about online - have been rather immersed in the Twitter campaign for the continuation of Versailles series:

1) either with a season 4: https://www.change.org/p/fan-for-a-season-4-of-versailles
2) or a spin-off for a fascinating character that is Fabien Marchal, especially since he is the one simply abandoned without an ending in the so-called "final episode": https://www.change.org/p/at-capa-drama-a-spin-off-fabien-marchal-series-for-one-of-the-best-characters-in-versailles

Not an easy thing to accomplish, but there are already quite a few signatures and hope. Besides, the worst thing would be not to try at all, right? ;)

By the way, the Twitter account for the campaign is @SaveVersailles. Fans are welcome to join in the effort!

Things About Me meme

Those who ask are given a number - and you tell about yourself that many things.

[personal profile] soundofsunlight  gave me 11:

1) One of my hobbies is making crosswords, but I don't do it often.
2) My favourite colours are black, dark gray and brown.
3) Recently discovered Twitter, and it consumes too much time.
4) Scared of lifts (as in elevators).
5) I hate the taste of water - unless it has been transformed into tea or another drink.
6) I give names to my gadgets, houseplants and bicycles.
7) Want to have a dog, but probably never will.
8) I always find a way to get my life more complicated.
9) I re-watch and re-read a lot.
10) I hate spoilers!
11) My favourite flowers are blue forget-me-nots, but most often I don't get to see them when they bloom, because I'm in a city.

fandoms

Seen in [personal profile] soundofsunlight 's journal:
1. What was the first fandom* you got involved in?
2. What is your latest fandom?
3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?
5. Which fandoms have you written fanfiction for?
6. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?
7. What are the best things about your current fandom?
8. Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?
9. What surprised you the most about your latest fandom?
10. Do you miss your first fandom?

*if you aren't into fandoms, exchange the word for 'hobby/hobbies.

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
I suppose, it was The X files - although, as it was my pre-Internet time, "involvement in the fandom" could only mean discussing the series with a friend, maximum a couple of friends. But that can count, too, right?

(reminds me of a small concert I once went to, the topic of which was fandoms; however, most of the performers there did not seem to have many fandom-related songs, so they sang whatever they liked, with a foreword along the lines of: "Well, I guess we can say that collecting things / walking / cooking etc is a fandom, too!")

2. What is your latest fandom?
Versailles (the tv series). Latest = current, right?

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?
Hmm... A difficult question. There were good things everywhere. ASOIAF and Gleams of Aeterna, I guess, because of the many in-depth analysis posts other fans made, a real pleasure to read and sometimes comment. Also, the fandom-inspired music and other forms of creativity other than fanfiction, really thriving in these two fandoms. On the other hand, the Versailles fadom seems to have a very friendly atmosphere - at least what I have seen of it so far.

4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?
No.

5. Which fandoms have you written fanfiction for?
Only LOTR, very long ago and very briefly. I think finding out fanfiction can be considered illegal really made an impression. Although I still do invent stories about my favourite characters - in my mind.

6. How did you get involved in your latest fandom?
Decided to watch the series, since it was "historical", even though I was sceptical. It was around the new year, and my traditional way of spending half the New Year night is to search the Internet for current-fandom-related stuff, something I do not allow myself much at other times. So, I had some time to do research. Although, surprisingly, most communities I found only afterwards.

7. What are the best things about your current fandom?
everything to do with Fabien Marchal :) - well, ok, almost everything.

8. Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?
All of them.

9. What surprised you the most about your latest fandom?
A small number of Versailles avatars and Fabien fanfics?

10. Do you miss your first fandom?
We lost touch with those friends, and it is sad. On the other hand, I do suspect reconnecting now will not be easy: we've had too different interests for too long, and now very different lives.

First experience of explaining Finnish grammar in French! Not bad for an improvisation, I guess, and luckily it was conjugation of type 1 verbs without consonant gradation - but I will need to look up some more terms before next class.
But it was actually fun...

Summary of the year 2017

I used to write such posts for my livejournal, and I think I would like to continue the tradition here. So, from now on in English:

Tv-series of the year: different versions of the story of the Borgia family kept me busy watching and re-watching throughout the year... until I stumbled upon Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and, very recently, Versailles. But, I suppose, The Borgias, Borgia and The Borgias (oh, those almost identical titles!) are still the winners in this particular contest.

Book of the year: this has been almost exclusively a Borgia-related non-fiction year, and it would be hard for me to pick one particular book.

Movie of the year: I have been watching a quite a lot of movies with Sean Harris this year. For this summary I think I will choose 24 Hour Party People, because it had some impact on what I listened to as well.

Music of the year: I suppose it would be Zaz and Nemnogo Nervno. Also, discovered Joy Division. A couple of Nemnogo Nervno songs:

Website of the year: italki.com where I teach and study languages. Also, scil.tampere3.fi which I worked on last summer. And, definitely, Instagram is an important addition to my social media accounts, starting as work related and staying after the work was done.
Month of the year: actually, not sure.

Season of the year: summer. Made very challenging by a full-time internship, a part-time job and several online courses – but also very exciting.

Part of the day: evening.

Dish of the year: huge chicken legs. I confess I buy them marinated – something I avoided before. Oh, and apple pies – now if my mother brings too may apples, I know what to do about them!

Drink of the year: tea, now often with lime or lemon and curcuma.

Purchase of the year: summer fingerless gloves from Etsy and a wide-brimmed hat, to help me cycle on a sunny day.

Thing (or is it item?) of the year: yarn, especially iris yarn.

Disappointment of the year: the realization that I should have majored in another field, but it is too late to correct it. Luckily, though, I got a chance to add the right choice to my CV through the previous internship.

Achievement of the year: Surviving the summer :) Also, finding the second internship placement quicker than expected – I actually phoned them to ask if it was too late to apply, because the ad had been there for over a month, and they said I could just come right away. Another proof that a phone call can be very useful :)

Language of the year: Italian.

City of the year: Tampere.

Place of the year: TAMK main campus. Stayed there all summer for the internship – and, I must say, it is even nicer there with less people around, especially at the library. Here is a photo I took of it back then:

Colour of the year: black and purple.

Trip of the year: study trip to Antwerp, all the way from Tampere by car. Hard, but a change an adventure. Even though it did end with the realization I wrote about above, I liked the trip itself.

Tradition of the year: let me see... This is not a good year for traditions, actually, since for the first time I am not celebrating in Moscow. So, no decorating Christmas tree: my cypress and the small pine-tree are too fragile for decorations. But I will, as usual, go online after midnight to allow myself all those youtube clips and searching for avatars and fanfiction that I don’t usually have time for during the year. This time, though, not until 6 AM: my internship starts on January 2nd, 8 AM :(

Friday Five (a bit late...)

From [community profile] thefridayfive :

1. What are your feelings about snow?
I like it - unless it is still snowing in May. But in winter, it makes everything very beautiful.

2. What is the one thing you really dislike that is associated with snow
If it melts and then there is frost again, everything is covered with ice and it becomes dangerous to walk outside. Happens many times every winter, unfortunately.

3 What is the one thing you really like that is associated with snow
The way it shines in the sun. Also, the winter holidays are, for me, connected with snow. That's two things, though :)

4. Do you anticipate or dread bad weather reports?
I know I should, but I don't usually follow weather reports. And then I am surprised why the weather is not what I'd actually expected...

5. Are you dreaming of a White Christmas?
I hope the snow lasts. My two Finnish Christmases were both without snow. It was pretty, too, with fairy lights everywhere, but just felt wrong. Especially when they were opening the Christmas Fair in the rain.

I guess this is what might happen when you watch something that is about events that you at least vaguely know. As part of trying out Cmore, decided to try Versailles. It was only halfway through the second episode that I somehow figured out that I'd started with the second season, not the first one!

No season 1 on Cmore, though, so I'll have to wait for the discs to become available at the library. Disappointing. As well as the fact that by the time I registered an account, another series I wanted to watch - Midnight Sun - was already gone from the site. This is the problem with all those streaming services: they don't have everything you might want, and what they do have does not stay there forever :(

One of the disadvantages of having the skin on your fingers dried by the cold is that the dull ends of needles get into the finger tips very easily. I must get myself a thimble.

once a non-Halloween person decided to answer a set of Halloween questions...

Questions from [community profile] thefridayfive  :

1. What are you going to dress up for Halloween?
Frankly, I doubt I'll dress up at all. I keep forgetting about Halloween year after year.

2. What was your favorite Halloween costume you ever had?
The only one I can remember - because there's a photo somewhere - is a costume I wore for a school Halloween play. Only I was playing the part of a frightened little girl and wore my own clothes - that is, the slightly more festive variety: a jacket and, I think, a miniskirt. But considering that I'm not really fond of dressing up, I would probably call it the best even if I did remember anything else :)

3. What is your favorite type of candy?
Hmm... with herbs? But better, chocolate.

4. What are your feelings on pumpkin flavoring or pumpkin spice flavoring?
Not particularly cheerful - because I'm not too fond of pumpkins. I've got zero experience with either, though.

5. With October almost gone, what was your favorite part of the month?
This part:

In other words, before it turned to this – overnight:

Although snow is pretty, too.

I was so happy to be getting an extra hour of sleep due to the time shift... and then forgot all about it and got up as usual, only this time it was 8, not 9 (the phone I'm using as an alarm clock doesn't shift the time automatically).
Typical...

emails and Facebook

So, Facebook does not want to send a confirmation email to my GMX account - nor to my mail.ru account! Does it mean that both addresses are not acceptable or that Facebook isn't functioning properly?
I wrote a message about the problem, and got a "thank you for your feedback" and nothing more.
Seems like my account is now forever tied to that stupid old address.

Wind howling outside, scattering the brownish-yellow leaves. Can't say that all the beauty is gone, though: there is a certain sad kind of beauty in bare trees, fallen leaves and small patches of fragile first snow, too. And the cold - though it is much more pleasant to think of it while being inside.

But the cycling season is officially over :(

Los Borgia (2006)

(just realised I haven't been   here for a while)

So, I still haven't written that supposedly long Borgia-related post I've been talking about since almost the start of this journal - but yesterday I watched Los Borgia. I'm calling it by the original Spanish title to distinguish it from all the other versions (really, their creators should have come up with something... well, more creative than the almost or even identical titles we now have - although it's even worse in Russia where all of the titles are identical, no almost).

As I had expected from a bit-less-than-2,5-hours-long movie that tries to tell the whole story, though it does give a general idea of some of the major events, it's often confusing. I doubt I'd have formed a clear understanding of what's going on there if I hadn't watched three series and read even more non-fiction on the subject. At some point I even became confused as to how many children Lucrezia had, in this movie, before Ferrara. The Naples situation is never clearly explained, and the French are only mentioned. A lot of events are not included. And, sure enough, some things were changed, I guess to look more exciting on screen, but that was to be expected.

On the whole, the movie left the impression of being very superficial in portraying both the events and the characters. Some stories do need far more space than a movie can give.

Note: It is the only version I've watched so far that shows Micheletto (well, ok, Miguel in this one, as far as I remember; a character with many name variations :) ) as Cesare's friend from a while before Rodrigo Borgia's papacy - though, on the other hand, there doesn't seem to be definite proof of that in reality. So, neither a plus or a minus, just an observation on the character the Showtime version makes me pay special attention to... apart from the exact name, apparently - shame on me...
